When you look in device manager, you want to look at the storage controller driver, not the disk driver as that will always be Microsoft. Although I really havnt a clue why I see a msg for Desktop Window Manager unable to start because desktop composition setting is disabled Under Performance I have it set to "let Windows choose" and desktop composition is checked along w most everything else.

If you have installed w7 in ide mode and then change the bios to ahci it will not boot or work it will say boot something or another is messed up or can not see the drive what ever- It will not work at all if using the marvel ports and before installing the drivers for it. Without that you can't have Aero, so if Aero is marvepl then DWM is working You shouldn't have to manually close anything when you shut down, are all those programs up to date?
